"Antitrend". Taste the word. This is what I strive for in my designs. We used to live by "buy it and wear it out", today it's "buy it, toss it, and buy again". Why? Certainly we've lost respect for the goods we use. We don't know how they're designed or made and we don't care if they last a year or a lifetime as long as we can buy the next version. I design environments and products that make a difference for their users, that last and can be recycled in an environmentally respectful way. I'd like designers, manufacturers, and consumers to ask themselves: Do we really need this?
As part of this effort I've adopted Considerate Design, where form, function, and respect for end-users, manufacturers, and materials are all equally important. Our economy isn't built on the amount of stuff we buy and sell, it's about the utility, durability, and minimum environmental impact of the stuff we use every day. |
